The Tracheostomy Safety elearning programme provides doctors, nursing and allied health practitioners and students at all stages of their career with the knowledge and skills required to safely manage patients with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy.
While tracheostomy and laryngectomy emergencies are uncommon, they can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. In response, this high-quality online learning resource was developed by the UK’s National Tracheostomy Safety Project (NTSP), to support the effective management of adult, paediatric and neonatal tracheostomy and laryngectomy critical incidents and improve outcomes.
The elearning programme contains six sessions to support the independent learning & professional development needs of those caring for ‘neck breathing’ patients, either routinely or in an emergency.
These sessions are aligned to existing guidelines, evidence, and experiences in managing tracheostomy and laryngectomy incidents – with an additional focus on preventing emergencies through basic care done well, and on patient-focussed improvements around eating, drinking and talking.
The programme is suitable for general and specialist nursing staff, medical & healthcare staff and allied health professionals from all backgrounds, wherever they practice around the world. Though the content is primarily aimed at staff working in hospitals, this programme and resources are also applicable to those who care for patients in community settings.
The programme also provides a learning resource for trainers to integrate into local teaching and educational programmes.
Written by the UK’s Top Clinical Specialists
