eIntegrity’s popular dentistry programme (e-Den) has been sold to the University of Otago’s Faculty of Dentistry – home to New Zealand’s only dental school. All 650 undergraduate trainees in the Faculty will now have access to this world-class online resource.
e-Den covers all aspects of the dental curriculum, with more than 300 knowledge sessions on topics such as patient assessment, periodontal disease, anxiety and pain control, and the restoration and replacement of teeth. The programme, which has been produced in the UK by the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons, includes many interactive elements, such as animations, videos and self-assessment exercises.
Professor Paul Brunton, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago, said: “e-Den will undoubtedly be a great addition to our undergraduate programmes. In a digital age where students are accessing learning in increasingly diverse ways, we need to embrace novel approaches that complement traditional teaching methods and e-learning will play a key role in this process.
“e-Den is a highly interactive, quality-assured resource. It provides a broad theoretical foundation on core topics, helping students to prepare for lectures and practical work. This also enables us to focus our teaching on discussion of key points rather than lecturing – helping to strengthen learning and understanding on the many complex concepts involved in dentistry.”
e-Den, which has been written and edited by leading dental professionals, is widely used across the UK National Health Service. The University of Otago has purchased e-Den following a successful trial amongst students.
Andrew Lamb, Student President in the University’s Faculty of Dentistry, said: “e-Den is fantastic resource. The wide range of topics and high-quality content will make students more self-motivated and passionate about what they are learning, giving them instant feedback on their progress with self-assessment.”
In addition to dental training, e-Den provides a highly flexible tool for continuing professional development (CPD) of qualified dentists.
Professor Brunton said: “e-Den is an excellent CPD resource, particularly in countries such as New Zealand where practitioners can be based in geographically disparate and remote areas and access to face-to-face learning is often limited.”
